Brutale 1090 RR

There is little left of the old Brutale model, as 85% of the parts have been completely redesigned. From the aesthetics, to the engine, to the rolling chassis, no component can be interchanged with those of the previous versions.

Among the new parts:

• Front wheel rim, either gravity die-cast, or forged
• Front brake disk
• Suspensions Internals (oil dynamics and components of the front fork)
• Instrument cluster (design, logic definition and information handling)
• Brake pump with integrated tank
• Headlight
• Mirrors with directional indicators
• Handlebar
• Handgrips
• Steering damper
• Fuel pump
• Fuel filler cap
• Inner damper (oil dynamics and inside components)
• Rear swingarm
• Rear turn signals
• Taillight
• Pressure die-cast rear taillight support
• Rear wheel hub, either gravity die-cast, or forged

Many of these parts have been designed and crafted by MV Agusta, rather than sourced from market suppliers, thereby affording technical and aesthetic perfection. Of all the world’s manufacturers, only MV Agusta obsessively pursues aesthetic perfection in its component design, because its aim is to make beautiful what others make only functional. And, without being presumptuous, the Brutale is the best example there is on the market.

The differences with respect to the 990R:

• The new steering head has a new steering damper on the handlebar
• The air ducts of the air box, painted in the same color as the tank, become an
integral part of it, and as a result, the design is even more aggressive
• The valve cover is painted red
The 1090RR version comes in two color formats: pearl white/black and red/silver.

Headlight - The headlight retains the same drop profile and the same dimensions, but introduces a fresh, more modern design, which takes account also of a modified support, but eliminates the direction indicators. Inside, in addition to a new polyellipsoidal element, there is a system of 8 LEDs that create a “light strip” effect, like that found on cars, which for motorcycles is entirely new.

Instrument cluster and instrumentation - The new lines of the instrument cluster have abandoned the soft shapes of the previous cluster to achieve a style that is in keeping with the modern, slender features of the bodywork. It is designed to fit a personalized, interchangeable cover, which the rider can select from those available in the accessory line. The instruments are also all new, working in conjunction with the engine control module via a high speed CAN line, retaining the split dial, with the rev counter, which is even more precise. The two LCD screens have been enlarged and have even more functions. There is now an indicator showing which gear is engaged, the fuel level, the speed, the hazard key, the water temperature, and the chronometer function, with memory of laps and of times. The instruments are already set up to use a system for monitoring tire pressure.

Handlebar - The fitting of the handlebar is flexible, to improve comfort and to reduce the vibration level. On the integrated handlebar clamps, the upper triple clamp assembly, including the handlebar clamp, is new. This latter has been designed with an elegant hinge release system, which enables the handlebar group to be quickly dismantled. The handgrips also have a new design, with an alternation of smooth and rough areas that improves grip.

Rearview mirrors - The rearview mirrors are larger and have more volume for greater visibility, but have also been placed higher up than before; the arm is in pressure die-cast aluminum, to reduce vibrations and to improve stability. They house LED direction indicators (3 on each side), which are perfectly incorporated into the rear mirror assembly, yielding a cleaner line than the traditional position.

Key block - The ignition block is the very latest generation, fitted with an immobilizer, the presence of which is indicated by a red light on the instrument cluster. The fuel cap is also new, with an advanced design in which the MV name stands out on the back, thanks to careful and precise manufacturing.

Bodywork and technical fittings - The air ducts for the air box are larger and tapered directing additional airflow. The radiator protections, no longer in metal and integrated with the mechanical components, are now part of the bodywork. In addition to streamlining the radiator and protecting it, they act as ducts to provide better cooling. The most evolved part of the motorcycle is the rear, thanks to a thinner, more modern tail, which makes sitting more comfortable. The LED taillight is integrated into the tail, which is no longer in plastic, but is pressure die-cast in aluminum, and is an entirely new design element. The two beautiful exhausts, which flow along the right side of the motorcycle, have been enhanced, eliminating the welding at the tips of the silencers and, above all, featuring an even more inclined and thinner cut that matches the lines of the bodywork. The external engine supports are sleeker and, along with the side stand, are embellished with the MV logos in relief.

Raised by her grandmother after being abandoned by her parents, Nana was expelled from high school after being falsely accused of prostitution. These hardships may have led to her dark and possessive behavior, going so far as to hooking up Komatsu Nana with her guitarist, Terashima Nobuo so that she could keep Komatsu Nana by her side.

A Review of the Scorpion EXO 1000 Helmet

On Friday I bought a new Scorpion EXO-1000 helmet, and now I have done some actual riding with it.

This helmet is built like a tank. The outer shell is a bit larger than the typical helmet. For comparison, I can't fit this helmet in the rear position under the seat of a Burgman 400. All my other helmets will fit. It weighs 1820 g. My HJC Symax flip-up helmet was only 1667 g., and that was probably my heaviest helmet until the EXO 1000. The new helmet Mary Ann bought, the HJC IS-16 also with a flip down sun shield, was 1653 g. I have done several rides now to Port Dover (90 minutes), and the extra weight does not bother me. It's just an extra 150 g. or so. Much of that increase in weight is due to the Snell certification, which seems to usually add about 100 g.

Another interesting feature is the air pump system. There is a warning label on the underside of the chin bar to emergency personnel, to deflate the cheek pads before attempting to remove the helmet. And even if they do, this helmet is a bugger to get off. It may loosen with time, but right now, if some medical emergency people have to remove this helmet, I am done for. Of course, there is a technological solution for this problem too. Just buy a "Shock Doctor Helmet Removal System" and install it in the helmet. Once you install this accessory in your helmet, the Emergency Team will be able to squeeze an air bulb to pump the helmet safely off your head without aggravating your spinal injuries. I suppose one day this may be mandatory, and 10 million helmets might have to be recalled to retrofit the system.

Now for the internal sun visor which I tested yesterday in brilliant sunshine, with white snow and wet roads. For a while I also was riding directly into the sun, and the shield is not dark enough for that. No shield ever is. One solution for the setting sun is to have a black tape strip across the top of the face shield, and then you can tip your head to just block the sun. To handle the reflection off the wet road, polarized glasses work well. The helmet's built in flip down sun shield is a light smoke colour. A dark smoke colour shield is available on Amazon.com for under $30.

The one feature that I didn't like the look of before the ride, was the lever that props up the face shield a few millimeters to allow some air to circulate. It also functions as the face shield lock, which I did not use or need yet. But when I was actually riding, the prop worked perfectly to open the shield just a crack. While riding, I can easily find the lever, even with my winter gloves. You can pop it back down easily by pressing the shield. This works to clear fog on the shield while moving. Yes, the faceshield has anti-fog coating, but it only works down to about 7 degrees C when there is also rain and high humidity.

The anti fog coating works reasonably well. It's the first time I have been able to fog up my eye glasses before the face shield.

On my Vulcan with the handlebar windshield, the flip down sun visor all by itself was enough wind protection with the face shield up for short runs at lower speeds.

I don't know if it may be too hot for some people (we don't get really hot weather here), but at 10c the top vents actually make the top of my head cold. The rest of the vents don't seem to make any difference when sitting behind the handlebar windshield.

This is a heavy, large helmet with lots of features and a Snell safety rating. I like the look of it, it has a modern shape, with a compound curved face shield (horizontal and vertical) and tasteful graphics. So far, the extra weight seems to be worth carrying.

My cosplay partner-in-crime is learning much about the trials and tribulations of cosplay, but I think she's enjoying it overall. It's nice to have a girl to cosplay with. We're already planning our next endeavours...

Meanwhile, our prop making keeps getting pushed back in the schedule, which really isn't good. We'll be starting them this week.

RIP Corey Haim dead at 38

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Actor Corey Haim has died, Access Hollywood has confirmed.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's office confirmed the actor died at 2:15 AM on Wednesday at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank, Calif.

The Los Angeles Police Department said they received a call from the hospital before 4 AM confirming the actor's death.

He was transported from the home he shared with his mother, Judy, in Toluca Hills, Calif. to the hospital.

"This morning at about 1:30...Corey Haim's mom found him. He got up out of bed and had been feeling ill for the last couple of days. As he got out of bed, he felt a little weak and went down to the floor on his knees. He's had flu-like symptoms. She called paramedics. They responded and transported him to the hospital where he was pronounced [dead] at 2:15 this morning," Winter said.

Authorities found four prescription drug bottles inside the apartment he shared with his mother, but no illegal drugs, according to Winter.

The Subliminal Message of The Hurt Locker

This is a spoiler alert, in case you have not seen this movie and still want to see it.

The main reason we decided to go and see "The Hurt Locker" was simply out of surprise that this movie won the Oscar for best film and best director. Mary Ann and I both wanted to get an idea why it won and Avatar lost out.

"The Hurt Locker" is shot in a documentary style, to give a realistic effect, with very shaky camera work. Luckily I got used to to the jiggling camera after a few minutes

I have read several movie critics who went after Avatar for being too simplistic. So let's judge "The Hurt Locker" by the same standard, for it's over-simplifications, and not be fooled by the shaky camera work into believing this is reality.

After watching the whole movie, I'm trying to remember even one Iraqi killed by mistake. On one hand the movie goes to great length to give the impression of gritty realism, even at one point showing a soldier taking a piss, and yet somehow misses the most tragic reality of this war and many others. It is a fact that you can't easily tell the innocent civilians from the bad guys, and sometimes you end up killing innocent civilians to save your own life. So if you're not going to bother with the ugly fact of collateral damage, then don't bother showing people pissing to make your movie look real.

How many times in the movie was it likely, and realistic, that an innocent civilian would be shot? Let's start with the first bomb (remember I said spoiler alert). The soldier spotted the guy with a cell phone and shouted that he should put the phone down. He might or might not have been trying to detonate the bomb with the phone. It turn out he was actually detonating the bomb that killed their Sargent, and he did not respond to calls to put the cell phone down. Why didn't they shoot him? I guess we are to believe that the soldiers don't shoot people unless they have proof someone is a bad guy. This one even turned out to actually be detonating the bomb, but his life was spared because they were not sure. I do not think that is realistic. Doesn't anyone listen to the news?

One the second bomb defusing episode, an innocent taxi driver ran through a road block, ignoring shouts to stop. He drove right up to the guy in the bomb suit and stopped. Still nobody shot him. The bomb guy pulled out his pistol, threatened the taxi driver with it and told him to back away. He didn't move. At this point I'm wondering if the movie is trying to make a point about the real care and affection the Americans have for the ordinary Iraqi citizen. Anyway, after a few more threats, and shooting out the windshield the driver finally got the idea that his presence was unwelcome and he backed up, and was taken into custody by the US Forces. In reality, I believe he would have been so riddled by bullets that he would never have made it past the road block, or anywhere near the bomb disposal expert.

There is even an incident illustrating the politeness of the Americans. While stuck in traffic with their Humvee, the bomb squad is yelling at the driver in front of them to move aside. When he doesn't, they throw a plastic water bottle at the car. Yes, in Toronto rush hour traffic that would provoke some road rage. But youtube is full of videos of military Humvees in Baghdad ramming cars, and even some shooting of drivers of other cars that get too close. In fact, the sign on the back of their humvee says something like stay back 200 feet or you will be shot. It doesn't say "Or we will throw a plastic water bottle at you". As someone actually says at one point in the movie "You don't need to throw a wrench, you're allowed to shoot people here".

At another tense moment an Iraqi with a camcorder is standing on a balcony filming the bomb disposal unit working on a car bomb. It's as if the camcorder guy is not afraid of being shot, and nobody shoots him, though they are seemingly worried about it.

Out in the desert the the Bomb Unit meets up with an SUV driven by a bunch of armed men, dressed as terrorists. Nobody gets shot, everybody is really calm. Then they discover that these men are "Special Forces" or maybe mercenary bounty hunters disguised as terrorists. SO they are on the same side. I think we know already of several cases of friendly fire, where people were actually killed in situations far less alarming than the meeting portrayed in this film. But again it is simply taken for granted that no "friendlies" are ever shot and killed. What else would you expect in a war where not even innocent Iraqis are shot and killed.

The last sequence of the movie, an Iraqi man has bombs strapped to him, and is pleading for help in removing them. I wonder if the bomb disposal specialist would really would go over and try to defuse that bomb. Anyway, he does, putting his own life in jeopardy to save an anonymous Iraqi man in who has been booby trapped with a bomb. Even when he sees the bomb has a timer and only 2 minutes left, and there are several case-hardened padlocks that need to be removed, he keeps working to the last possible moment, then apologises profusely, and runs for cover. Too late, as he is hurt by the explosion, but not critically.

I almost forgot to mention the obligatory stereotypical liberal, the psychiatrist who is made to look an absolute fool in the movie. I'm fairly sure this character is thrown in for no other reason than to give a thrill to the Rush Limbaugh and and Mark Steyn fans.

This movie is full of situations that make you think the American occupation forces would never harm innocent Iraqi people, making you think they would never shoot Iraqis just in case they might be a threat. I believe this runs counter to everything I have seen about the Iraq war or the Afghan war or the Vietnam war. If the occupation forces could treat the local people with such care, winning the war would be inevitable. But the reality is that in these insurgencies, the terrorists or freedom fighters, or whatever you want to call them, can use the civilians as cover. That's what makes the guerrilla wars difficult, and unless people understand that, they will remain confused about why the war turns out badly. Without the basic understanding, invasions will continue, always with the hope that they will win the next one.

There were plenty of other situations that stretched the imagination, but I would not count as outright propaganda. For example, putting out a car fire with one extinguisher. (and it's a car bomb at that). I don't want to go heavily into weapons and equipment capability, I'll leave that to people who have experience, but I suspect that some of the usual stretching of the truth takes place.

So the Oscar went to a relatively obscure film, "The Hurt Locker" instead of Avatar. And there was a lot of criticism about the liberal "peace" message of Avatar, and its oversimplified message. It's especially annoying to go to "The Hurt Locker" and find out it is a piece of propaganda with a hidden message "Americans don't kill innocent people, only terrorists do that". "The Hurt Locker" has the opposite of the message of Avatar, but certainly no more realistic, despite all the jiggling camera work.

In recent years, tattoos have become more important and said that nearly one of every four people has one. Unfortunately, some of us carried away and get something that we regret. When it comes to get a tattoo removed, there are several options. TCA is one of them. But how effective is it? Let's find out.

What is TCA?

Better known as the skin or chemical scarification, this method uses acid solution to assist in the removal of the skin. Trichloroacetic acid form usually used is acid (TCA), non-prescription acid peel strength that has the look and consistency of water. This technique was originally used to remove wrinkles and acne scars. However, it also has been proposed as an aid in the removal of tattoos. It is stated that in some cases, it can remove tattoos and other people, this can help alleviate the ink to fade or to reduce the amount of expensive laser treatment.

How It's Done

Trichloroacetic acid is basically a peeling agent. When applied to the affected area, it causes inflammation under control. In reaction, the skin will start peeling off and pour in a week application. This process causes the pigment ink to break apart and move toward the skin surface, where followed by the growth of new skin. The use of TCA usually requires several months of use to act efficiently, thus, it should be reapplied every six weeks.

Effectiveness Scarification

It is impossible to estimate how long it takes to get the expected results much. Managed to get a tattoo removed will depend on several factors. The size and age of tattoo, the type of ink used and the color of the skin all contribute to the efficiency of the process. Applications to play an additional role, as an amateur tattoo has a success rate higher then they were done by a professional. Although sometimes effective, there are many cases where scarification may not work. And because of trichloroacetic acid to act by causing second-degree burns the skin, acne scars and permanent results can occur.

A Word Of Caution

Approximately 10 to 20% of individuals who use the TCA may see some adverse skin reactions. These include pain, blisters and skin discoloration worse. Each different skin types and is recommended to do a patch test before treatment to determine any skin allergies. Also should be noted that this product should not be used on darker skin tones. Has been known to have unexpected results on the asian, african Hispanic and skin color. Not only need more applications, but can cause additional extreme hypopigmentation of the skin. This is not recommended for those who are not fair skinned.

So when picking the tattoo artist, be very sure about the artists knowledge of Kanji, pick an artist who is proficient in Japanese.

One can also find lot of Kanji symbols and their representations on the internet. But several of these symbols are also incorrect. David Gilbert Experiment on Toyota Throttle

A new argument has come up in the Toyota sudden unintended acceleration problem. (SUI). Professor David Gilbert of Sanford University has found a way to produce acceleration in a Toyota without recording a fault code in the engine. This test was done in a dramatization for ABC News, where it was claimed that this would not happen with any other automaker's fly by wire throttle system.

Toyota came back with results for several other automakers, where they showed that same thing happened on other fly by wire systems.

I'm certainly not surprised, since the way Gilbert rigged the system involved a 5 volt source, cutting several wires and reconnecting them with a specific resistor. In other words, simply reproducing a valid electrical signal to the engine without using the supplied gas pedal.

Toyota also pointed out that Gilbert's research was funded by the trial lawyers hoping to sue Toyota for billions of dollars in damages.

The discussions are found on these two web sites below, along with many comments that are actually more interesting than the work Gilbert did. By that I mean, Gilbert provided some insight into the inner workings of the Toyota engine management system. I did not know that they had a fault code set in case of a short in the throttle pedal, but it's quite logical that there should be one. But it is even more interesting to examine the many "brain faults" in the comments, reminding us that this is still essentially a case of mass hysteria. And even if one day it turns out that they find a real flaw that causes the Toyotas to accelerate, this issue will still be a great case study in mass hysteria, because of the number and variety of flawed arguments being presented.

Jalopnik and Autoblog

It is impossible to pick out a typical comment from online readers, but I felt like this one deserved to be printed in this blog simply because the Academy awards were presented last weekend, and I'm in an award giving mood. So this gets the Oscar for most incomprehensible comment in the category of self proclaimed professional expert in the online Toyota SUI debate. It was on the Jalopnik site, and you may have missed it because it was hidden, and also was in reply to another comment about the quality of education at SIUC (Southern Indiana University at Carbondale Home of the fighting Salukis). It is also quite instructive to see how far off topic people can get, but in this case, the name Sanford University carries a lot of weight in the minds of impressionable people, so I guess it was relevant to comment on whether or not Sanford was a legitimate institution of learning because one of the commenters applications was rejected. Also, I don't want to know what a Saluki is.

There still is something I do not get, why not reverse the VDC of one of the sensors, or run it through a logarithmic integrator. That way a bunch of this would could be noticed by the ECM. Also both are Hall effect sensors in a non shielded part and could pickup the same interference. Why not shield it or have one sensor be an optical slit counter? Another option would have been to use TP and a serial interconnect with parity, cksum, or CRC.

But my bet is that the trouble was in the firmware of the ECM. My guess is that the error cases were not exercised thoroughly enough in testing. My hunch is that there is a problem where when the ECU gets unlucky and gets an error condition under just the right conditions there is an off-by-one sort of bug in some innocuous error logging code and the ECM goes off into an infinite loop twiddling the word it needs to for the watchdog timer to think it is making forward progress. During this time the throttle is where it last was.

I say this since I had to put in logarithmic integrators, reverse voltage, use optical slit counters, add hardware watch dog timers, use R-485 then safety EPLC that supposedly would bring DACs to 0VDC automatically, and still had to fix a bug much like I described which was finally the actual mistake that cured that blasted system. I do industrial controls software for a living.

There is a possibility that America is approaching a point where buying a car becomes impossible for the middle and lower class. Like health care, where costs went up and access was reduced with the excessive lawsuits against doctors. Today, Americans may think that destroying Toyota will be good for them, but they do not realize that all car makers are in the same boat, and if you can destroy one car maker without proof of a fault, you can do the same to the rest of the low-cost car makers.
